Just outside Larissa, a small freshwater spring lake offers one of the most unusual and relaxing inland dives in Greece, filled with dense underwater vegetation and crystal-clear spring water.
Dive Overview
Near the village of Argyropouli in the Tyrnavos region lies a small freshwater lake created by a natural spring.
Although shallow, the lake provides a completely different diving experience compared to the Mediterranean Sea. Dense aquatic plants, bubbling spring vents, freshwater conditions, and calm waters create a peaceful and almost surreal underwater environment.
The maximum depth rarely exceeds 7 meters, while the water temperature remains stable around 16°C throughout the year.
Visibility varies depending on the season, with spring often offering exceptional clarity.
Entry & Conditions
Access to the site is very easy by car.
Park near the designated parking area and carry your equipment to the small bridge beside the lake, where most divers prepare and perform their buddy checks.
Because this is a freshwater dive, significantly less weight is required compared to sea diving.
The lake sits at approximately 100 meters elevation, so no special altitude diving procedures are necessary due to the very shallow depth profile.
Swimming and fishing are prohibited in the lake, while diving is allowed only after coordination with the Municipality of Tyrnavos.
Entry is performed through a small opening beside the bridge.
The bottom is muddy, so visibility can decrease temporarily if the sediment is disturbed during entry or exit.
What You’ll See
Divers are free to explore the lake in any direction, as navigation is extremely simple.
The highlight of the dive is the lush freshwater vegetation.
Long aquatic plants rise from the bottom all the way to the surface, creating an environment completely different from typical Mediterranean reefs.
One of the most interesting features is the spring vent itself, where fresh water rises from the lakebed, creating the visual effect of boiling water beneath the surface.
The calm atmosphere, soft light, and unusual vegetation make the site especially enjoyable for underwater photography and relaxed exploration.
Important Consideration
- Diving allowed only with municipal permission
- Freshwater dive requires less weight
- Muddy bottom can reduce visibility quickly
- Protect the fragile underwater vegetation
- Entry and exit can be slippery
Depth Profile
The lake is extremely shallow, with maximum depths rarely exceeding 7 meters.
Tips for Divers
- Use minimal fin movement to avoid disturbing sediment
- Excellent site for beginner divers and photographers
- Spring months usually offer the best visibility
- Keep buoyancy controlled to avoid damaging vegetation
- Freshwater means easier buoyancy management and less equipment rinsing afterward
