The Anonymous Wreck, Ios

Jun 4, 2026

Hidden beneath the crystal-clear waters of Ios lies one of the island’s most intriguing dive sites. Known simply as “The Anonymous Wreck,” this small shipwreck is surrounded by local legends, mystery, and a surprisingly rich underwater environment that makes it an enjoyable dive for divers of all experience levels.

Dive Overview

Many stories surround the wreck known locally as the Anonymous Wreck. According to the most popular version, the accident occurred roughly sixty years ago during a winter storm.

The vessel was reportedly traveling from Santorini to Ios when strong southwesterly winds pushed it onto the reefs between Kolitsani Beach and the harbor, causing it to sink.

Local folklore claims that the ship’s captain was the sole person aboard. After the sinking, he managed to swim through rough seas to reach Kolitsani Beach. Some islanders even tell the tale that he later disappeared, unable to live without his beloved vessel.

Whether fact or legend, the mystery remains unsolved, adding a unique atmosphere to this fascinating dive site.

Entry & Conditions

Access to the wreck is possible only by boat.

Several dive operators on Ios organize excursions to the site, including centers operating from the Mylopotas area.

The wreck lies close to shore in relatively sheltered waters and is suitable for divers of all certification levels.

Entry is performed directly from the boat, either fully equipped or through a water entry preparation, depending on the vessel and operator procedures.

What You’ll See

The wreck has broken apart over time, leaving various sections scattered across the seabed.

Within a relatively small area, divers can explore:

  • The stern section standing upright on the seabed
  • The engine
  • The anchor
  • Various metal remains and wreckage debris

The surrounding seabed consists of Posidonia seagrass meadows, sandy patches, and rocky formations, creating a varied underwater landscape.

Marine life is abundant throughout the area, and visibility typically exceeds 10 meters during the summer months, often becoming considerably better on calm days.

Because the wreck is spread over a compact area and sits in moderate depths, it offers plenty of opportunities for photography and relaxed exploration.

Important Considerations

  • Boat access only
  • Metal wreckage may have sharp edges
  • Maintain good buoyancy around the wreck remains
  • Suitable for both divers and snorkelers due to the shallow depth range

Depth Profile

The wreck lies between 7 and 20 meters.

Tips for Divers

  • Excellent site for beginner and intermediate divers
  • Bring a camera; visibility and lighting conditions are often very good
  • Take time to locate the different wreck components scattered around the site
  • Snorkelers can also enjoy views of parts of the wreck from the surface on calm days
  • Explore slowly—the details are spread throughout the area rather than concentrated in one structure

Why This Dive Stands Out

The Anonymous Wreck combines local folklore, history, and an easy, enjoyable dive profile. While the vessel itself remains unidentified, its story has become part of the maritime heritage of Ios, making this dive as interesting above the water as it is below.
