Rising from the deep blue waters off southern Lesvos, Tarti Reef offers dramatic rock formations, rich marine life, and a versatile dive suitable for a wide range of divers.
Dive Overview
Near Tarti Beach on the southern coast of Lesvos lies the impressive Tarti Reef, a large underwater rocky formation that attracts divers with its varied topography and abundant marine life.
The reef covers a broad area filled with towering pinnacles, rocky ridges, and striking geological formations that create an exciting underwater landscape.
Because the site offers both moderate and deeper profiles, divers can easily adapt the dive according to certification level, experience, and air management.
Entry & Conditions
Access to the dive site is possible only by boat.
The area is generally protected from strong currents, and conditions are usually calm enough for relaxed diving.
Divers can prepare either onboard the boat or directly in the water, depending on personal preference and sea conditions.
Due to the depth profile of the site, the area is not particularly suitable for snorkeling visitors. Non-divers accompanying the group will likely enjoy nearby beaches more comfortably.
What You’ll See
Tarti Reef features an extensive underwater landscape filled with dramatic geological structures and isolated pinnacles rising from the seabed.
The recommended route is usually circular, allowing divers to explore different sections of the reef while gradually adapting depth and bottom time to their dive plan.
Beyond the impressive rock formations, the site is known for rich marine life.
Large schools of fish frequently move across the reef, while pelagic species are also commonly encountered in the blue water surrounding the formations.
The constantly changing terrain creates a very dynamic and visually rewarding dive experience.
Important Consideration
- Accessible only by boat
- Not ideal for snorkeling due to depth
- Pelagic encounters possible in open water
- Monitor depth carefully around the deeper reef sections
Depth Profile
The reef offers multiple depth levels ranging from shallow rocky sections to deeper areas beyond recreational limits.
Tips for Divers
- Excellent site for wide-angle underwater photography
- Follow a circular route for easier navigation
- Keep an eye on the blue for passing pelagic life
- Adapt the dive profile according to certification level
- Great option for both relaxed and deeper recreational dives
Why This Dive Stands Out
Tarti Reef combines dramatic volcanic-style underwater formations, excellent biodiversity, and open-water scenery, making it one of the most rewarding reef dives around Lesvos.
