Plakes Canyon in Volos is a unique shore dive known for its dramatic underwater formations and small canyon, offering an atmospheric experience even in low visibility conditions.
Dive Overview
Just a short escape from the city of Volos, the Plakes beaches are a popular destination for both locals and divers. While visibility is often reduced due to freshwater springs in the area, the underwater terrain more than makes up for it.
Access requires carrying your gear down a relatively steep path with steps connecting the road to the beach, but the reward is a dive full of structure and character.
Entry & Conditions
The entry point is a small, rocky beach. Getting into the water can be slightly challenging without fins or dive boots due to the uneven terrain.
After entering, complete your checks and descend immediately. Visibility is frequently limited because of freshwater inflow, which creates a hazy but often atmospheric underwater environment.
What You ‘ll See
The seabed drops off quickly, and within a few minutes you’ll locate the canyon on your right side. This is the main highlight of the dive, offering a narrow and visually striking passage.
If visibility allows and you are an experienced diver, heading straight out to 25–30 meters reveals tall rock formations with old fishing nets draped over them, creating a dramatic and slightly eerie underwater scenery.
After exploring this deeper section, turn right (keeping the shore on your right shoulder) and follow the natural contours of the seabed until you reach the canyon.
Sponges dominate the area, forming impressive and unusual shapes that add texture and color to the dive.
Important Consideration
