Jun 6, 2026

Paleokastro is a relaxed and enjoyable shore dive located just outside Heraklion, Crete. Combining easy access, shallow depths, excellent visibility, and abundant marine life, it is an ideal dive for beginners, photographers, and anyone looking to combine diving with a day at the beach.

Dive Overview

Situated beneath the historic Venetian fortress of Paleokastro, this dive site offers a pleasant underwater landscape of rocky formations, patches of seagrass, and Mediterranean marine life.

The shallow profile makes it suitable for divers of all certification levels, while the clear Cretan waters provide excellent opportunities for underwater photography and marine life observation.

Entry & Conditions

The site is easily accessible by car and features a popular organized beach. During the summer months, parking can become challenging, so arriving early is highly recommended.

Entry is performed from the left side of the beach. After completing your pre-dive safety checks, descend and follow the underwater contours with the shoreline on your left shoulder.

The site is generally sheltered and suitable for relaxed diving throughout most of the diving season.

What You’ll See

The underwater terrain consists of rocky formations, patches of Mediterranean vegetation, and sandy sections that create a varied and attractive landscape.

Although the dive remains relatively shallow, the area supports a surprising amount of marine life. Divers can expect to encounter schools of small fish, octopus, nudibranchs, and various forms of macro life hidden among the rocks and vegetation.

Thanks to the excellent visibility typically found in Crete, natural light penetrates throughout the entire dive, making the site particularly attractive for photography. Midday dives are especially rewarding, as sun rays illuminate the seabed and create beautiful underwater scenery.

Important Considerations

  • Arrive early during summer to secure parking
  • Popular beach with increased activity during peak season
  • Excellent buoyancy helps protect marine life and vegetation
  • Ideal site for beginner divers and underwater photographers
  • Pay attention to small marine creatures hidden among the rocks

Depth Profile

The dive remains comfortably within recreational limits, with depths gradually increasing to a maximum of approximately 16 meters.

Most of the exploration takes place between 6 and 16 meters, providing long bottom times and excellent natural light throughout the dive.

Tips for Divers

  • Bring a camera for wide-angle and macro photography
  • Dive around midday for the best lighting conditions
  • Take your time exploring the rocky sections for macro life
  • Perfect dive for training, refreshers, and relaxed exploration
  • Return along the shallower route to maximize bottom time
