Glaros Archaeological Dive Site, Nies

Apr 11, 2026

The Glaros dive site in Nies is a protected underwater archaeological area featuring Byzantine anchors and amphorae scattered across a wide seabed.

Dive Overview

Located on the western side of Cape Glaros in the Nies area, this underwater archaeological site offers a fascinating glimpse into maritime history.

The seabed is scattered with Byzantine anchors, ceramics, and a significant concentration of amphorae. Archaeological research suggests that a merchant vessel carrying wine amphorae sank in this area.

Like other archaeological dive sites in the Western Pagasetic Gulf and Peristera Underwater Museum, access is strictly controlled and available only through authorized dive centers with trained guides.

Entry & Conditions

This is a guided dive conducted exclusively through licensed dive operators.

All procedures, including entry and briefing, are managed by the dive center. Divers must follow strict rules to protect the archaeological remains.

Nearby, the settlement of Nies offers a calm and sheltered beach for non-divers.

What You ‘ll See

The site extends over a relatively large area, with multiple planned dive routes designed for different certification levels.

One of these routes is accessible to Open Water divers, while others explore deeper sections.

The remains of anchors, amphorae, and ceramics are partially integrated into the natural underwater environment, creating a unique blend of history and marine landscape.
