A relaxed and life-filled reef dive inside the protected waters of Laganas Bay, Marathonisi offers one of the most enjoyable and biodiversity-rich dives in Zakynthos.
Dive Overview
Marathonisi is suitable for divers of all certification levels and combines shallow depths, excellent marine life, and playful underwater navigation around rocky formations.
Located inside the protected marine area of Laganas Bay, where fishing is prohibited, the site supports abundant sea life and even occasional encounters with loggerhead sea turtles.
Although the dive remains relatively shallow, the maze-like layout of rocks, channels, and passages can make navigation surprisingly challenging and entertaining.
It is often considered one of the most fun second dives around Zakynthos.
Entry & Conditions
Access is possible only by boat, usually through dive centers operating from Keri or Laganas Bay.
The dive begins at approximately 7–10 meters depth and gradually deepens to a maximum of around 18 meters.
Conditions are usually calm thanks to the protected bay, making the site ideal for beginner and recreational divers.
Because the area attracts many rental boats during summer, surface activity can become intense and requires attention during ascent and safety stops.
What You’ll See
The site offers two main routes.
The first follows a slalom-style path weaving between rocky formations and small passages.
The second circles a large central rock formation with multiple swim-around opportunities.
Both routes are rich in marine life. Divers regularly encounter loggerhead turtles, moray eels, nudibranchs, octopus, and schools of Mediterranean reef fish.
Inside some rocky overhangs and cavities, small coral formations can also be found.
The underwater landscape is full of natural reference points, allowing divers to create their own routes while exploring the reef.
Because the bottom is rocky rather than sandy, visibility generally remains good throughout the dive.
Important Consideration
- Boat access only
- Heavy seasonal boat traffic near the surface
- Easy depth profile but navigation can be confusing
- Protected marine ecosystem — maintain good buoyancy
- Possible turtle encounters
Depth Profile

Tips for Divers
- Use natural rock formations as navigation references
- Bring a camera — excellent marine life photography opportunities
- Take your time exploring cracks and overhangs
- Stay alert during ascent because of boat traffic
- Ideal site for long bottom times and relaxed diving
