Kaptan Ismail Hakki Wreck Dive

May 20, 2026

The Kaptan Ismail Hakki wreck is a shallow and highly photogenic shipwreck dive, ideal for both divers and snorkelers looking to explore an easily accessible wreck in clear water.

Dive Overview

The Turkish cargo ship Kaptan Ismail Hakki was built in 1970, measuring 58 meters in length and 9 meters in width.

The vessel sank on January 30, 1978, reportedly due to cargo shifting during rough conditions.

Today, the wreck rests on its port side, beginning at only 2 meters depth and reaching a maximum depth of approximately 11 meters.

Because of its shallow position and excellent natural light, the wreck has become a favorite site for underwater photography, recreational divers, and even snorkelers.

Entry & Conditions

Park your vehicle at the marked location.

If arriving with a standard passenger car, you may need to park approximately 100 meters higher on the nearby flat area.

From there, follow the easy trail carrying your equipment down toward the sea.

Non-divers accompanying the trip can enjoy swimming in the clear water and even observe parts of the wreck from the surface.

The shoreline is rocky but scenic.

Entry into the water is made through carved stone steps located in the left opening of the shoreline.

The depth at the entry point is around 2.5 meters, so enter carefully.

Because many boats pass through the area, the use of a surface marker buoy is essential.

What You ‘ll See

Swim approximately 240 meters following a heading of 145° until you reach the stern of the wreck, where the rudder and propeller become visible.

Descend there and begin your exploration.

The ropes still attached to the ship are remnants of the crew’s final attempt to secure the vessel to shore in order to save it.

The lines eventually snapped, and the ship sank shortly afterward.

One of the most interesting features of the wreck is the open cargo hold, where an automobile can still be seen inside the ship.

The wreck’s shallow depth and bright conditions make it an excellent location for underwater photography and relaxed exploration.

Snorkelers can also comfortably visit the site from the surface.

After completing the dive, return following the same route and exit again using the stone steps.

Important Consideration

  • Long surface swim required
  • Heavy boat traffic in the area
  • Surface marker buoy mandatory
