Kato Gatzea is one of the most popular dive sites in the Volos area, offering a vibrant reef, easy access, and the perfect combination of diving and summer relaxation.
Dive Overview
By far one of the most well-known shore dives in the Magnesia region, Kato Gatzea combines convenience with rich underwater life. Located close to Volos, it’s an ideal destination for both casual dives and full-day seaside experiences.
The site can be accessed from two different points. During the warmer months, when Rivera Beach Bar is open, divers can take advantage of its facilities and easy entry. Alternatively, access is possible from the village side, especially during winter, requiring less gear carrying but a longer surface swim.
Entry & Conditions
The entry in front of the beach bar is rocky, but well-maintained wooden platforms and natural shade make preparation comfortable.
Enter the water from the right side of the platform using the ladder. Be aware that water sports activities operate in the area, so always respect the designated swimming corridor, both on entry and exit.
Swim to the right of the buoys, and after approximately 10 meters, begin your descent following your buddy check.
What You ‘ll See
Upon descending, you’ll encounter large rock formations that gradually form a wall. This is where the dive truly begins.
Following the wall reveals one of the most vibrant reefs in the Pagasetic Gulf. The area is rich in marine life, largely due to reduced fishing activity near the beach bar.
As you approach 30 meters, the wall transitions into isolated rocky outcrops covered with marine growth. These structures host a variety of species and often contain lost fishing gear.
A strong thermocline is commonly present at depth, adding another layer to the dive experience.
Important Consideration
- Boat and watersports traffic
- Presence of thermocline
- Fishing lines and lost gear
- Respect entry/exit corridor
Depth Profile
The dive starts shallow and gradually leads to a wall formation, reaching depths of up to 30 meters. The deeper section transitions into scattered rocky formations.
Tips for divers
- Stay within the buoy-marked safe zone during entry and exit
- Follow the wall for the most rewarding route
- Watch for thermoclines at deeper levels
- Turn the dive at half tank and explore the shallower reef on your way back
- Take your time — the reef hides a lot of small life
Why this dive stands Out
Kato Gatzea stands out for combining a lively reef, easy access, and a full beach experience. It’s one of the few dive sites where you can enjoy both a high-quality dive and a relaxing summer day in the same location.
