An 8,000-Year-Old Settlement Discovered Beneath Lake Ohrid

Mar 16, 2026 | News

You may have dived in lakes before, but few hide secrets as ancient as those found in Lake Ohrid. On the Albanian side of the lake, near the village of Lin, archaeologists have discovered a lakeside settlement dating back nearly 8,000 years.

And this is not just a few scattered artifacts on the lakebed. Researchers have identified an entire prehistoric stilt village, built on wooden piles driven into the shallow waters of the lake.

The Discovery

For the past six years, an international team of archaeologists led by the University of Bern and the Institute of Archaeology in Tirana has been investigating the site.

Working in shallow but often murky water, divers carefully excavate the lakebed using specialized tools designed for underwater archaeology and low-visibility conditions.

During these dives, researchers have recovered thousands of artifacts, including wooden remains, tools, bones, and organic materials that have been exceptionally preserved by the freshwater environment of Lake Ohrid.

What Divers Found

One of the most remarkable discoveries is the large number of wooden stakes surrounding the settlement.

These wooden structures appear to have formed a kind of defensive barrier around the prehistoric village.

According to the researchers, this may represent the oldest known example of an organized defensive construction in a lakeside settlement in Europe.

The preservation of the wooden remains has allowed archaeologists to study the construction methods used by these early communities thousands of years ago.

Why It Matters

The discovery offers valuable insight into how early European communities organized and protected their settlements.

Lake Ohrid itself is one of the oldest lakes in Europe, and its stable freshwater environment has helped preserve archaeological material in exceptional condition.

Sites like this allow researchers to better understand how prehistoric populations lived, built their homes, and adapted to their surrounding environment.

What Happens Next

Perhaps the most exciting part of the discovery is that researchers have explored only about 1% of the settlement so far.

Excavations continue dive after dive, slowly revealing more of the ancient lakeside community hidden beneath the water.

Just a few meters below the calm surface of Lake Ohrid, an entire prehistoric world is still waiting to be uncovered.

For divers and archaeologists alike, it is a reminder that sometimes the most fascinating chapters of human history lie quietly beneath the surface.
