Agia Vasso Vathy Dive Site, Pelion

Apr 11, 2026

Agia Vasso Vathy in Pelion is a demanding deep shore dive, rewarding experienced divers with abundant yellow and red gorgonians rarely seen at such accessible locations.

Dive Overview

As the name suggests, this is a deep and demanding dive, suitable only for experienced and properly trained divers.

Reaching the site from shore requires significant effort, including carrying gear and a long surface swim. However, the reward is exceptional — dense gorgonian formations, including both yellow and red species, something rarely encountered on shore dives at relatively accessible depths.

Entry & Conditions

The beach is a beautiful and unspoiled sandy stretch of the Aegean, often used for free camping.

From your parking point, you can either carry your gear to the far left side of the beach or gear up earlier and perform a long surface swim of approximately 450 meters.

Swim with the rocky shoreline on your left shoulder until you reach the next point, where a rocky outcrop marks the entry location.

Take your time before descending — the swim can be physically demanding.

What You ‘ll See

Once you descend, follow the natural slope of the seabed as it drops steeply.

At around 27 meters, the first gorgonians begin to appear. Beyond 38 meters, red gorgonians dominate the landscape, forming impressive coral gardens.

These delicate structures create one of the most visually striking dive environments in the region.

The terrain continues deeper, often tempting divers to exceed their planned depth — strict discipline is required.

Important Consideration

  • Long surface swim (~450m)
  • Deep dive profile
  • Decompression dive likely
  • Fragile gorgonians
  • High physical demand

Depth Profile

The dive quickly descends beyond 27 meters, with key features between 30–40+ meters and deeper sections extending further.

Tips for divers

  • Rest before descending after the long swim
  • Follow your dive plan strictly — avoid depth temptation
  • Turn the dive early to allow proper decompression
  • Monitor gas carefully, especially for extended profiles
  • Maintain perfect buoyancy near gorgonians
  • Use shallower areas for decompression stops
